Romania is accelerating its efforts to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Prime Minister Luca Niculescu said on Tuesday, in a message posted on X, that he had held what he described as an excellent discussion with OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann.

Niculescu called Cormann a friend and an important supporter of Romania, and pointed to his backing for the country’s path toward membership. In the post he wrote: “Excellent discussion with OECD Secretary-General @MathiasCormann, a strong friend and supporter of Romania.”

He said the accession process offers an outstanding basis for sound policies and good practices in Romania, in the interest of citizens and the economy, and an opportunity the authorities intend to use fully, as set out in the Government Programme. The message restates the Romanian authorities’ interest in continuing accession and in using the opportunities that come from cooperation with the organisation.

Niculescu described membership as both a foreign-policy objective and a chance to adopt more effective administrative policies and practices. He said closer alignment with OECD standards can improve how public policies are designed and applied in Romania, with benefits for citizens and for the business environment. He added that the authorities plan to make full use of that opportunity in line with the government programme.

At the end of the message he repeated Romania’s determination to continue the steps needed for membership, writing: “Romania remains fully committed to becoming a member of the OECD family as soon as possible.”

The OECD brings together states that cooperate on economic and social policies based on international standards and good practice. For Romania, accession means assessing and aligning important areas of administration and the economy with the organisation’s standards, a process that can support institutional reforms and a better business environment.
