A round table on the informational dimension of security in the Black Sea region was held on Thursday at the headquarters of the National Audiovisual Council (CNA).
Vice-president Valentin-Alexandru Jucan said the council hosted nine journalists from major Japanese media institutions who are in Romania under the public diplomacy programme Reinforcing Europe's Eastern Flank, organised by the EU Delegation in Japan together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He said they discussed how information manipulation works in the region, from websites that clone legitimate media to networks of coordinated accounts, and what a regulator can do without becoming an arbiter of truth.
Jucan said the risk is systemic, so the response must also be systemic, and that the task is to describe operations rather than answer post by post. He said the discussion was open and included direct questions, as it should with journalists. He added that the same networks operating in Romanian also operate in Japanese, which is why cooperation between regulators and newsrooms on both flanks matters.
